Authorities investigating deadly crash on Interstate 81 in Cortlandville

CORTLAND, N.Y. — The Cortland County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal car crash that occurred on Interstate 81 in Cortlandville early Sunday morning.

The accident happened at around 2:30 a.m. on I-81 near the off-ramp for Homer, Exit 12, Capt. Rob Derksen with the sheriff's office said in a news release Sunday morning.

A 2008 Kia Optima with four occupants was traveling northbound on I-81 when the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck the guard rail on the left side of the road. As the driver and three passengers were exiting the vehicle, a 2015 Ford Mustang struck the Kia Optima. One of the occupants was killed "as a result of the collision," the sheriff's office said.

The other three occupants were evaluated at the scene by medical personnel but were not transported for any medical treatment.

The sheriff's office says it is investigating the cause of the crash, though "names of the involved parties are not being released at this time," pending notification of family members.
