Join the Cultural Council of Cortland County to view a once-in-a-lifetime exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art entitled American Watercolor: in the Age of Homer and Sargent.

This once in a lifetime exhibit goes far beyond Homer and Sargent. Their watercolors represent only 39 of the almost 200 paintings and items on exhibit. As the title indicates, the exhibit is an attempt to place Homer and Sargent within their environment, examining their predecessors, contemporaries and followers, and delving into how they interacted with and responded to their contemporary societies. Their story is woven into the texture of the times in which they lived.

The exhibit makes one realize that watercolor had a rich history before Homer began his career, including active and important contributions by women artists. Among many other women, the exhibit includes two works by Henrietta Homer, Winslow's mother. A section of the exhibit also focuses on the evolution of watercolor pigments. Homer's palette and Sargent's tube paints are included in the display of painting supplies used throughout the period.

This exhibit will not travel to any other location.
