Rue 21 clothing store will close Cortland location

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- A nationwide teen clothing franchise is closing 400 locations across the country, including its store in Cortland County.

Rue 21 joins JCPenney, Macy's and Aeropostale as the latest major clothing retailer to shut down many of its brick-and-mortar stores as they fail to compete with the digital retail market.

On Saturday, Rue 21 published a Facebook post which confirmed rumors that the company would be shuttering hundreds of stores nationwide.

An employee at the Cortland store said Wednesday she is unsure of the exact date that the store will be closing, which is located at The Shoppes at Cortland on Bennie Road, across from Walmart. She said they are currently offering 20 to 40 percent off all clothing items.

Once the closings are finalized, Rue 21 will still be left with more than 700 stores in 48 states.
