SUNY Cortland men's lacrosse defeats Clarkson, 11-9, in non-conference win

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Juniors Nate Beresovoy (LaFayette) and Devin Phelps (Chittenango) each scored three goals as the nationally sixth-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team erased a one-goal halftime deficit and defeated Clarkson, 11-9, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.

Senior T.J. deLyra (Brightwaters/Bay Shore) and sophomore Joey Panariello (Islip) tallied one goal and one assist for the Red Dragons (11-1). Seniors Mike Hart (Cornelius, NC/Hough) and Jimmy Nielsen (Miller Place) and junior Tyler Brown (Camillus/West Genesee) netted one goal each with junior Thomas McNaney (Marcellus) collecting two assists.

Junior goalie Joe Scalise (Fairport) registered 14 saves for Cortland. McNaney collected four ground balls, senior Anthony Zangari (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) recorded three ground balls and three turnovers, senior Dave Foster (Farmingville/Sachem East) caused three turnovers and Hart and sophomore Ethan Parks (Penfield) each scooped up three ground balls.

Kyle Brown led the Golden Knights (7-5) with four goals. Ryan St. Croix notched three goals, Ryan DaRin had one goal and two assists and Conor Bartlett added one goal and one assist, while Sam Groves chipped in with two assists.

Goalie Nick Strandholm made 11 saves for Clarkson. Ryan Gabriel won 11-of-21 faceoffs and secured five ground balls. Mark Simmons collected four ground balls, and Mark Uhlig, Michael Nourse and Justin Gibson recorded two caused turnovers apiece.

In the first half, neither team could build more than a two-goal lead, which Cortland managed at 5-3 early in the second quarter. Clarkson, however, closed the half with the last three goals to grab a 6-5 edge at intermission. Cortland quickly took a 7-6 lead on a man-up goal from Phelps 20 seconds into the third quarter and an unassisted score from Beresovoy at 12:34.

St. Croix knotted the game at 7-7 before the Red Dragons strung together three goals from three different players for a 10-7 advantage with 9:44 remaining in the fourth quarter. Brown's man-up goal at 5:04 cut Cortland's lead to 10-8, but Phelps gave the Red Dragons back a three-goal cushion with 2:32 on the clock.
