HOMER, N.Y. - One of the most remarkable, energetic, creative teachers we’ve ever worked with, Melanie “Mel” George, is battling non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Mel worked at Homer High School for nine years after leaving her first career as a nurse at Cortland Regional to go back to school. Mel and her husband Tom, also a second-career teacher at Homer’s Senior and Junior High schools, and their children Liam, Kennedy, and Connor (all Homer students or alumni away at college) need our help.

Mel George went back to nursing at Cortland Regional. In reconnecting with her first career, she’s continued to be the dynamic, compassionate, skilled professional we all knew and loved as a teacher. We welcome her friends, former students, and peers—both at Homer and at Cortland Regional—to come celebrate Mel on Sunday, June 4, at Center for the Arts, Homer.

The event starts at 1:00 pm, featuring lunch foods, soft drinks, desserts, and a cash bar. Baskets will be raffled and there’ll be a 50/50 drawing at 5:00 pm. Tickets ($15 advance, $20 at the door) will be available from Homer Schools teachers, Cortland Regional staff and various local merchants. Tickets may also be purchased online at the Center for the Arts’ box office (subject to $3 service charge). Children under 12 are free. Donations are welcome. Contact Joe Cortese at [email protected].

Entertainment will be live music: Homer student groups from 1:00-3:00, and three “grownup” acts on our stage from 3:00-5:00: Monkeywrench Revolt (Americana by Ted Andrejko, Tom George & Nate Francisco), Merkley & Morgan (Homer grads turned Cortland-area favorites), and Wade Preston (Accomplished pianist and singer who played “Billy Joel” five years running in Broadway’s “Movin’ Out.”)

Want to volunteer? Want to donate? We’d love your help! E-mail Joe Cortese at [email protected].
