In what promises to be a truly cosmic experience, the Center for the Arts in Homer will be hosting an eclipse viewing event on Monday, Aug. 21, starting at 12 p.m. and going on through the duration of the (partial) eclipse to 4 p.m. There will be a light lunch served by the Center, with a workshop to create your own personal eclipse viewer. A space-themed soundtrack spun by local DJ Jake LaManna (of The Magnetic Pull) will take place during the eclipse itself. The event costs $5 and includes lunch and materials. Eclipse viewing glasses will be readily available for $2.
Astronomers and sky-watchers across the country are preparing for what will be the first total solar eclipse the nation has seen since 1918, marking the first time such a spectacle has occurred in 99 years. The sun will only appear completely covered from a relatively narrow path, starting in western Oregon and stretching diagonally across the country to South Carolina, but upstate New York will still be able to observe around 75% coverage. The moon will block the sun to the point where it gives off a glowing crescent shape, making it seem as though the day has started to turn to night in mid-afternoon! This rare extra-terrestrial phenomenon marks the first time the Center for the Arts will be exhibiting a show put on by the skies.
Attendees will get to enjoy lunch starting at noon, and will have the opportunity to make their very own eclipse viewers in a fun workshop. During the actual viewing, DJ Jake LaManna will be playing a fittingly space-themed soundtrack to accompany the orbital alignment. At 7:30 p.m. we reconvene for a screening of 2011: A Space Odyssey. NOTE: Due to the nature of this event, should there be rain or heavy cloud coverage, a livestream of the eclipse will be shown in the Whiting Theater at the Center for the Arts.
