Cortland firefighters extinguish vehicle blaze in front of St. Mary's School

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Fast-acting firefighters were able to extinguish a vehicle fire before it caused damage to a local school early Friday morning.

Shortly after 4 a.m. Friday, Cortland firefighters responded to a report of a vehicle that had caught fire in front of St. Mary's Catholic School on North Main Street in Cortland.

When crews arrived, the fire was nearing the main entrance to the school on Charles Street. Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze in less than 5 minutes, with no damage to the school, according to the Cortland Professional Firefighters Association.

No injuries were reported to firefighters or to the people inside the vehicle, the association said.

The City of Cortland Fire Investigation Team is working with the Cortland Police Department to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
