Cortland Farmers' Market celebrates 45th anniversary

Editor's Note: The following is a republished press release from the Seven Valleys Health Coalition.

The Cortland Farmers’ Market will be holding a 45th Anniversary Celebration at the market on Main Street in Cortland this Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017.

According to Joan Franklin of Valley View Farms, over the course of the 45 continuous years of operation, the Cortland Farmers’ Market has been a presence on Main Street. “We’ve always been right here,” said Franklin, “although at different points we were across the street. But always on Main Street.”

The anniversary celebration will include all of the market’s traditional vendors such as Saracene Produce, whose Al Saracene says that for him, “It’s all about the selling.” The owner of the former Nordic Sports on Main Street in Cortland has been a part of the market for at least 30 years.

Saracene said he loves gardening and beekeeping, but being at the farmers’ market is “the fun part. This is the easy part,” Saracene said. “I like the selling. I’m a salesman. It’s what I do.”

In addition to the regular vendors, for this Saturday’s celebration there will also be some special additional activities such as face-painting, and complimentary apples and baked goods.

The Cortland Farmers’ Market runs from 8am – 2pm on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Be sure to stop by this weekend to celebrate a great 45 years of supplying Cortland with fresh, local products!
