Burchell's hat trick propels Cortland Field Hockey past Morrisville

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Hannah Burchell (Whitney Point) scored three goals and assisted on another as Cortland defeated visiting Morrisville State, 7-2, in a SUNYAC matchup.

Cortland improved to 5-2 overall and evened its league record at 1-1. Morrisville is 2-4 and 0-2.

Jessica Welsh (Hamilton), Anna Branch (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and Jess Gibaldi (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) each finished with a goal and an assist for the Red Dragons. Dani Barto (Nichols/Tioga Central) scored once and Liz Athing (Bay Shore) ended with one assist.

Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) started in goal for Cortland. She made one save and did not allow any goals in 47 minutes, 16 seconds. Marissa D'Amico (Smithtown/Smithtown West) played the final 22:44 in the cage.

Elizabeth Leva and Lauren Kellum scored goals for Morrisville in the final 11 minutes to cut a 6-0 deficit to 6-2. Hayley Fonfara assisted on a goal, and Emma Gottung made 11 saves for the Mustangs.

Burchell opened the scoring in the fifth minute of play, assisted by Branch, and Welsh found the cage in the 17th minute off a short pass from Gibaldi. Burchell made it 3-0 with a long blast from the right side off a quick restart in the 30th minute, and Cortland led 3-0 at halftime.

Burchell completed her hat trick just 4:20 into the second half with a long shot off a feed from Welsh. Gibaldi scored off a rebound in the 43rd minute and Barto scored on a long shot off a penalty corner feed from Athing in the 48th minute to extend the lead to 6-0.

Leva redirected a ball from Fonfara into the cage with 10:28 remaining to break up Cortand's shutout bid. Kellum scored off the dribble with 5:44 left for Morrisville's other goal, and Cortland closed the scoring with 2:38 left when Branch took a cross from Burchell and buried a shot from about 10 yards away.

Cortland outshot Morrisville, 32-5, and earned 19 of the game's 20 penalty corners.

Cortland will travel to 18th-ranked William Smith on Wednesday, Sept. 27 for a 7 p.m. contest.
