Shutout streak extends for Cortland women's soccer with win at New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - For the sixth consecutive game and seventh overall this season, the Cortland women's soccer team blanked its opponent. On Saturday, the Red Dragons (5-0-3, 2-0 SUNYAC) defeated New Paltz, 4-0, in conference action to extend their shutout streak to 624:24. With the win, Cortland has posted its best unbeaten streak to open a season since 1989, and the seven shutouts in eight games was last accomplished also in 1989.

Freshman Casey Schmitt (Port Jefferson Station/Mount Sinai) scored her first two career goals to lead the Red Dragons. Freshman Erin Valente (Latham/Shaker) netted her first career goal, and freshman Anna Lieza Bradshaw (Westbury/Kellenberg Memorial) added her second goal of the season. Junior Amanda Profera (Wantagh) recorded two assists, and junior Siobhan Swayne (Plainedge) and freshman Janessa Factor (Farmingville/Sachem East) each chipped in with an assist.

Freshman Danika Svendsen (Stillwater) started in goal for Cortland, making one save in the opening half. Junior Abby Miller (Andover) took over for Svendsen in the second half and also stopped one shot. Megan Tornatore started in goal for the Hawks (4-6, 0-2 SUNYAC), turning aside three shots in the first half. Kately Cordero registered one save in the second half.

Valente started the scoring in the 17th minute with a rebound goal before Schmitt tallied back-to-back goals in the 28th and 33rd minutes, respectively. Her first goal followed a throw-in by Swayne, and her second score came inside the six-yard box off a cross by Factor. Bradshaw completed the scoring in tbe 69th minute, finishing off a pass from Profera.
