Lifelong Cortland resident opens up shopping plaza boutique

CORTLAND, N.Y. - A new business has popped up in Cortlandville, offering everything from common household items to not-so-common antiques.

Elly Buchalla opened Elly’s Variety on July 15, but the store officially celebrated its grand opening last week.

“This was on my bucket list,” Buchalla says of opening the store.

The variety store offers a range of products, including food, household products, construction equipment, and dollar items. Its also well-equipped with decorative holiday items for Halloween, Christmas, and Easter.

The store is located at the West Road Plaza, 3915 Route 281, Cortlandville. The space is also occupied by Anytime Fitness, Subway, and A Round Pizza.

Buchalla said she and her husband decided to open the store after noticing a decline in retail shopping locations in the Cortland area.

“So many stores are closing down all the time,” she said. “We were shopping around and thinking, ‘You know, maybe we could do something to bring people into the community.’”

While this is Buchalla’s first time owning her own shop, she has decades of experience in retail sales, having worked at department stores, gas stations, and playing card stores.

“This is the next step in my life, to see how I do here,” Buchalla said.

Store hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sundays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The store is closed on Mondays. You can visit the store’s Facebook page for more information.
