Sara Billings earned third team All-SUNYAC honors with a 13th-place finish out of 101 runners

SUNY Cortland Women’s Cross Country

NORWOOD, N.Y. - Cortland senior Sara Billings (Gansevoort/South Glens Falls) earned all-league honors with a top-15 finish at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Cross Country Championships. SUNY Potsdam hosted the event at Norwood-Norfolk Central School on Saturday.

Cortland finished fifth in the final team standings out of 10 schools with 166 points, four better than Oneonta and seven ahead of Brockport. Geneseo won the team title with 17 points, followed by Plattsburgh (76), New Paltz (81) and Fredonia (110).

Billings crossed the finish line 13th out of 101 runners in 23 minutes, 39.0 seconds over a 6,000-meter course. Geneseo's Elise Ramirez won the race in 22:22.2. Billings is recognized as third-team All-SUNYAC with her performance. The top five finishers are first team, places 6-10 are second team, and 11-15 are third team.

Freshman Sam Himes (Buffalo/Sweet Home) finished in 28th place in 24:29.0 and senior Megan Wagner (Niskayuna) was 35th in 24:51.9. Sophomore Eliza Nichols (Smithtown/Smithtown West) registered a 53rd-place time of 25:46.8, while senior Allison Segal (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) ended 74th in 27:07.8.

Cortland will compete at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regionals, hosted by Houghton College, on Saturday, Nov. 11.

NORWOOD, N.Y. - The Cortland men's cross country team finished in fifth place out of 10 schools at the SUNYAC Championships, hosted by SUNY Potsdam at Norwood-Norfolk Central School on Saturday.

Geneseo won the team title with 29 points, followed by Oneonta (68), Oswego (97), Brockport (115) and Cortland (144) in the top five. The Red Dragons edged Plattsburgh, which finished sixth with 150 points, and Fredonia, which placed seventh with 158.

Sophomore Cabel McCandless (Lindenhurst) just missed on earning All-SUNYAC honors with his 16th-place time of 27 minutes, 50.2 seconds over 8,000 meters. The top 15 runners are recognized as all-conference. Geneseo's Isaac Garcia-Cassani was the individual champion in the 111-runner field in 26:42.9.

Sophomore Nolan Vest (Coram/Longwood) finished in 21st place in 28:09.2 and junior Grant Boyd (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) ended 27th in 28:18.8. Cortland's top five also included sophomore Ryan Konotopskyj (East Amherst/Williamsville North) in 48th place (29:14.4) and junior Chris Thorpe (Pine Bush) in 57th place (29:34.2).

Cortland will compete at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regionals on Saturday, Nov. 11 at Houghton College.
