CORTLAND, N.Y. - Junior Justin Derlago (Winnipeg, MB/Selkirk) scored on a deflection off his body on the power play with 5:05 remaining in the game to lift the nationally 14th-ranked Utica men's hockey team to a 3-2 win Saturday night over Cortland. The Red Dragons fell to 0-2, while the Pioneers improved to 2-0.
Junior Mike Crowley (Buffalo/Springfield Blues) and freshman Scott Docherty (Oakville, ON/Georgetown Raiders) scored goals for Cortland with Crowley's being a short-handed effort that tied the game at 2-2 midway through the third period. Senior Dan Broderick (White Plains/New York PAL Islanders) and sophomore Ryan Fritz (Rochester/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) each collected an assist. Senior goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) stopped 30 shots.
Senior Dalton Carter (Toledo, OH/Northern Cyclones) tallied a goal and an assist for Utica, and sophomore Devin Warfield (Cary, NC/Carolina Eagles) added a goal while five players recorded one assist apiece. Sophomore goalie Gianluca Baggetta Maple, ON/North York) made 22 saves.
