Food pantry for SUNY Cortland students to open Monday

CORTLAND, N.Y. - SUNY Cortland is opening a college food pantry aimed at ending hunger among its students.

The pantry, which will open at 12 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 6, will be located in the basement of the Interfaith Center, 7 Calvert Street, in Cortland.

SUNY Cortland joins SUNY Oswego, SUNY Ulster, and SUNY Adirondack as the latest SUNY campus to offer free food options for students who are food-insecure.

An October 2016 report by the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness found that 1 in 5 college students at four-year institutions reported having low food security.

For the first two weeks, the pantry will be open Monday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., according to a media release.

The project is the result of planning and fundraising efforts by faculty, staff, students, and college alumni.

The pantry is currently only accepting non-perishable food items. Donations can be made out by check to:

Cortland College Foundation.
