CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland Regional Medical Center has received the highest ranking in New York State by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Value-Based Payment (VBP) program.

CMS is a federal agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that administers Medicare and Medicaid. Each year, the agency scores eligible New York State hospitals on their quality of care.

In its 2017 ranking, CMS scored eligible New York State hospitals on four aspects of care: risk-adjusted mortality and patient outcomes, patient experience, patient safety, and overall efficiency. In its 2017 ranking released earlier this week, Cortland Regional was placed at the top of state hospitals.

“Our score clearly emphasizes the fact that Cortland Regional is an ‘overachiever’ when compared to the thousands of other hospitals in our state and nation,” Cortland Regional President Mark Webster said in a press release Wednesday. “This number one ranking recognizes our ongoing quest for excellence in every area of patient care.”

Nationally, Cortland Regional placed 56 out of over 2800 hospitals. Last year, Cortland Regional was ranked as ninth; in 2015, it was ranked number one.

“Cortland Regional has demonstrated, once again, that it provides consistent, exceptional care,” said Johanna Ames, Chair of the Board of Trustees of Cortland Regional Medical Center. “This ranking reflects the organization’s leadership, hard work and dedication. This is not only a win for Cortland Regional. It is a win for the health of our community.”
