Cortland men's hockey drops 2-1 SUNYAC game vs. Fredonia

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Sophomore Tyler Riter (Orchard Park/Burlington Cougars) scored just before the midway point of the second period to break a 1-1 tie and the goal held up as the Fredonia men's hockey team defeated Cortland, 2-1, Friday night in SUNYAC action at Alumni Arena.

Senior Dan Broderick (White Plains/New York PAL Islanders) scored for the Red Dragons (1-5, 1-3 SUNYAC). Freshmen Conor Tierney (Point Pleasant, NJ/Philadelphia) and Alex Storjohann (Anthem, AZ/Kirkland Lake) each recorded an assist. Senior goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) made 26 saves.

Senior Sam Wilbur (Saginaw, MI/Kirkland Lake) also netted a goal for the Blue Devils (3-2-1, 2-1 SUNYAC). Junior Jimmy Morgan (Highlands Ranch, CO/West Sound Warriors) and sophomore Jacob Haynes (Whitby, ON/Fresno Monsters) picked up one assist apiece. Junior goalie Eric Bogart (London, ON/New England Wolves) stopped 23 shots.

Wilbur gave Fredonia a 1-0 lead at 9:59 of the opening period as the Blue Devils skated with a two-man advantage. Broderick tied the game less than three minutes later on a rebound in front.

Riter netted the game winner at 8:01 of the second period on a one-time shot at the right side of the net. Cortland pulled Weigman for an extra skater over the final 35 seconds but could not score the equalizer.
