Cortland men's basketball defeats Canton in blowout win, 93-54

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Justin Cooper (Pine Plains/Stissing Mountain) led five double-figure scorers as Cortland defeated visiting Canton, 93-54, in men's basketball non-league action.

Cooper finished with 17 points as well as team highs of six assists, five rebounds and three steals. Ryan Schmadel (Oriskany) scored a career-high 13 points, all in the first half, and added five rebounds and three assists.

James Morales (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) also scored 13 points, on 5-of-6 shooting, and matched Cooper with six assists. Zach Lydon (Elizaville/Stissing Mountain) finished with 13 points in just 12 minutes of action, and Nicky Bonura (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) chipped in with 11 points.

Cortland (2-0) finished the game 14-of-40 (35 percent) from 3-point range and 51 percent from the floor overall, while holding the Kangaroos to 36 percent shooting overall and 18 percent (5-of-28) from the arc. Cooper, Bonura and Schmadel each made three 3-pointers and Morales made two treys.

Jordan Ayers led Canton (0-2) with 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Joseph Werner added nine points and Adrian Williams handed out three assists.

Cortland trailed 8-5 about five and a half minutes into the game, but mounted a 15-0 run over a three-minute span to take a 20-8 lead. Carrel Joseph (Deer Park) scored five of the first seven points in that stretch, and Schmadel tallied the final eight with two 3-pointers and a layup. Canton stopped the run on an Ayers layup, but Schmadel nailed another 3-pointer with 10:41 remaining to give the hosts a 23-10 edge.

Cortland's lead grew to 50-25 at halftime and quickly moved to 32 points at 57-25 two minutes into the second half. The margin remained at least 30 the rest of the way.

The Red Dragons are idle for 10 days before returning to action at Ithaca on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 8 p.m.
