BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Freshman Scott Donahue (Commack/Boston Bandits) scored two third-period goals to seal a 4-1 win for the Cortland men’s hockey team over Amherst College Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the Frozen Turkey Challenge hosted by the Binghamton Devils. The Red Dragons improved to 3-6 with the tournament victory, while the Mammoths lost their first game of the season in dropping to 2-1-1.
Sophomore Ryan Fritz (Rochester/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) chipped in with a goal and an assist, and freshman Michael Faliero (West Seneca/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) also netted a goal for Cortland. Senior Andrew McCann (Bowmanville, ON/Wellington Dukes) collected two assists, and freshman Scott Docherty (Oakville, ON/Georgetown Raiders) added an assist. Senior goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) registered 23 saves.
Phil Johansson scored Amherst’s goal with Mark Esposito and Thomas Lindstrom picking up assists. Goalie Connor Girard made 19 saves.
Cortland took a 2-0 lead after the first 20 minutes of play as Faliero scored at 3:33 and Fritz netted his first goal of the season at 6:45. After a scoreless second period, Johansson made it a 2-1 game at 5:28 of the third period. Fritz then assisted on Donahue’s first goal at 10:23, and Donahue added an empty-net goal with 22 seconds remaining to clinch the victory.
