CORTLAND, N.Y. - Snow will begin falling in the Cortland area Sunday evening, increasing the likelihood for a white Christmas on Monday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory, which remains in effect from 9 p.m. Sunday through 7 p.m. Monday.

Christmas Day will be cold and windy with snow showers, with more significant lake effect snow arriving in northern New York into the middle of the week.

Drivers should expect slippery road conditions during holiday travel on Monday. Forecasters are predicting wind gusts of up to 45 mph, leading to blowing snow and poor visibility in some areas. Those high winds may break tree branches and cause scattered power outages.

Total snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are expected in Cortland County.
