Cortland men's hockey falls to Manhattanville

RYE, N.Y. – Manhattanville scored twice in each of the first two periods, including a pair of power play goals, and the host Valiants defeated Cortland, 4-1, in a non-league men's ice hockey contest.

Manhattanville, which is receiving votes in each of the latest Division III national polls, improved to 8-4-3 with the win. Cortland, playing for the first time in a month, dropped to 5-9.

Taylor Bommarito led Manhattanville with a goal and an assist. Keegan Davis, Thimmy Barbenius and Matt Lippa each scored once, and Tyler Feaver made 25 saves.

Dan Broderick (White Plains/New York PAL Islanders) scored for Cortland with 7:11 remaining in the third to break up the Valiants shutout bid. Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) finished with 31 saves, including 12 each in the first and third periods.

Davis scored 1:13 into the game to open the scoring, and Garbenius scored with 7:25 left in the first and Manhattanville up a skater to increase the lead to 2-0. The advantage grew to 3-0 on Lippa's goal 2:14 into the second, and Manhattanville went up 4-0 with 6:34 left in the period on Bommarito's goal during a 4-on-3 power play opportunity. Manhattanville finished 2-for-9 on power play chances and successfully killed off all six of Cortland's extra-man situations.

Cortland will host Johnson & Wales on Saturday at 3 p.m. on "Skate with the Dragons" Day. Admission to the game is free, and following the contest fans can skate with the Cortland players at Alumni Arena, either with their own skates or by renting them at the arena.
