Sophomore women’s ice hockey goalie Rachael Farmer (Grand Island/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) and junior men’s basketball guard Nicky Bonura (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) have been named the SUNY Cortland Athletes of the Week for the week ending Jan. 21.
Nicky averaged 17.5 points per game and shot 59 percent from the floor (13-for-22) in two Cortland victories. The SUNYAC Player of the Week was 8-of-16 from 3-point range and also averaged four rebounds per contest. Bonura scored 14 points, including 4-of-9 3-point shooting, in an 80-64 win versus Oneonta Tuesday. He scored 21 points, 18 in the first half, and was 4-of-7 from the 3-point arc in a 68-59 win at Oswego Saturday.
Rachael recorded a .912 save percentage and 3.34 GAA in three road games during the week. She posted her first career shutout with 21 saves in a 2-0 win at Canton Tuesday, then made a combined 82 saves in two contests at nationally top-ranked Plattsburgh. Farmer recorded a career-high 49 saves and helped the Red Dragons remain tied at 2-2 until early in the third period in a 5-2 loss to the Cardinals Sunday. She has started all 17 games for Cortland this season.
