Cortland men's hockey falls to Canton

Cortland, N.Y. – Friday night’s non-conference game featured the Cortland Red Dragons taking on the Canton Kangaroos. In a penalty-filled game, Cortland dropped the game to Canton, 4-2.

Cortland opened up strong by scoring two goals in the first period to take a 2-0 lead after one period. In the opening two minutes, Dan Broderick scored the first goal, with the assist going to Sean Perichak.

With two minutes to go in the first period, Michael Faliero scored the second goal of the game for the Red Dragons. The assist on that goal went to Andrew McCann and Alex Storjohann. It was Broderick’s third goal on the season and Faliero’s sixth goal. Perichak recorded his third assist and Storjohann
recorded his sixth assist on the year.

In the second and third period of the game, the Canton Kangaroos came out just as strong. In the second period, just as the Canton’s power play came to an end, Ben Beasley scored his first goal on the season and the first score of the game for his team. The assist went to Josh Sova, which was his tenth on the year. Canton would tie the game up with 3:08 left in the second period with a goal from Joey Vocino, his sixth of the season. Tyler Bullard and Josh Sova assisted on the goal.

The game would be tied after two periods, but that wouldn’t last for long. As the third period began, with Canton on a five-minute power play, Zach Pease scored on an assist from Kasey Kulczycki and Jake Mayette.

Down 3-2 with 2:29 left in the period, Cortland would pull their goalie, only to have Joe Deveny shoot the puck into the empty net not even a minute later. This sealed the game for Canton. The assist went to Ben Beasley.

Penalties were the story of the game as there was a combined 19 penalties between the two teams. The major penalty coming from the Red Dragons because of a contact to the head that led to the five-minute power play. Out of the 19 penalties, thirteen of them led to a power play.

Cortland falls to 7-11 and Canton improves to 6-12-2. These two teams will play each other again tomorrow at 3 P.M.
