McGraw basketball loses to Madison at home

MCGRAW, N.Y. - The McGraw varsity boys' basketball lost to Madison, 64-53, Tuesday night. This was the Eagles second lost to Madison this season.

The score was close through the whole game, but the Madison Blue Devils were the team that walked away with the win.

Sam Matteson had 21 points for Madison, shooting 9-15 from the free throw line. Spencer Haviland scored 22 points for the game, including 11-16 from the free throw line. Colton Stone had 14 points for the game as well.

Madison improves to 12-3, 8-0 in conference play. McGraw falls to 12-3, 6-3 in conference play.

Chase Curtis and Chris Pickert combined for 27 of the Eagles 53 points. Kevin Short scored 11 points for the Eagles, with most of his points coming in the second half of the game.

The game was tied going into halftime at 26 apiece. McGraw would come out strong in the third, taking a 34-27 lead midway through the third. Madison would storm back to go into the fourth only down 42 to 40. The Blue Devils would out score the Eagles 24-11 in the fourth to get the win.

“Our next game is Tuesday, so we gotta come out and work hard for the next week in practice and be ready to play.” McGraw player Kevin Short said, when asked how the team will bounce back before next game.

When asked how this lost affects the rest of the season, Coach Matthew Martins had this to say.

“We have to close out the rest of the season. We can’t underestimate any of the teams we are going to play against. We have to consider each of those games have a sectional impact, will it will.”

Looking ahead, McGraw will play three more games the rest of the season before Sectional play. The next game is next Tuesday at home vs. Stockbridge Valley. Madison will travel to Brookfield next Tuesday.
