Cortland man accused of punching corrections officer

CORTLAND, N.Y. — An inmate at the Cortland County Jail was charged with assault after he reportedly struck a corrections officer, the Cortland County Sheriff's Office announced Wednesday.

Francis J. Shelley, 24, of Cortland, was arrested on Feb. 13 after he allegedly punched a corrections officer while incarcerated at the county jail, the sheriff's office said.

The officer was able to secure the inmate in his cell and was evaluated for a minor injury at Cortland Regional Medical Center and released, authorities said.

The inmate was charged with second-degree aggravated assault, a class D felony, and arraigned in Cortland City Court.
