Handgun, drug paraphernalia found in Cortland motel room, police say

Hassan Reed, 32, and Amber Harris, 29 (Mobile Patrol)

CORTLAND, N.Y. — An argument at a motel room led to the arrest of a Cortland woman and a Syracuse man Tuesday morning, according to the City of Cortland Police Department.

At about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, city police responded to the Econo Lodge located at 10 Church Street in Cortland for a verbal argument.

According to police, 29-year-old Amber Harris, of Cortland, got into an argument with a 24-year-old man who was staying in a separate room. Harris refused to leave, police said.

Hassan Reed, 32, of Syracuse, was staying in the same room as Harris. He heard the commotion and proceeded to enter the man's room and threaten him with a handgun, according to Lt. Richard Troyer with the City of Cortland Police Department.

Harris and Reed went back to their room, and police were called to the scene a short time later. A search warrant was obtained, and officers found a loaded handgun with its serial number scraped off in the bathroom of their hotel room, along with a digital scale and plastic bags used for selling drugs.

While at the police department, Reed attempted to flush more than 16 grams of cocaine down the cell block toilet, Lt. Troyer said. Police also confiscated more than $2,000 in cash from Reed. He was charged with a felony of criminal possession of a weapon, as well as a felony charge of tampering with physical evidence. He was sent to Cortland County Jail without bail.

Harris was found with 3 grams of cocaine and a small amount of marijuana, along with some Hydrocodone pills without a prescription. Police confiscated $300 in cash from Harris and charged her with felony criminal possession of a controlled substance and several misdemeanor drug charges. She was jailed on $5,000 cash bail.
