Meet your SUNY Cortland Athletes of the Week

Editor's Note: This is a press release from the SUNY Cortland Athletics Department.

Junior softball pitcher Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford), senior baseball pitcher Christian Dufresne (Cocoa, FL/Space Coast) and junior baseball pitcher Jake Casey (Homer) have been chosen as the SUNY Cortland Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 15.

Jake Casey
Jake is the Co-Male Athlete of the Week along with teammate Christian Dufresne. Casey threw a nine-inning no-hitter with a career-high 14 strikeouts in Cortland's 21-0 win over visiting SUNY Canton Sunday. The no-hitter was the 20th in school history and the second in as many days for the Red Dragons (Dufresne no-hit Elmira on Saturday). Casey allowed five baserunners on four walks and a hit batter, but only faced two batters over the minimum as he picked off three runners.

Christian Dufresne
Christian shares the Male Athlete of the Week award with teammate Jake Casey. Dufresne tossed a no-hitter with a career-high 10 strikeouts and just one walk over nine innings in an 8-1 win vs. Elmira. The lone run he allowed came via an error, sac bunt, groundout and wild pitch. His no-hitter was the 19th in school history and just the third nine-inning no-no by a Red Dragon (Casey the following day vs. Canton recorded the 20th no-hitter overall and fourth nine-inning one).

Sam Van Dorn
Sam went 3-1 with an 0.55 ERA in five appearances, four as a starter. She allowed 23 hits and six walks and fanned 22 batters in 25 and two thirds innings. The SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week opened the week by allowing one unearned run, four hits and one walk and striking out six in a 9-1 win over Potsdam. Van Dorn also gave up just one unearned run and struck out three in a seven-hitter during a 9-1 win at Oneonta, and she tossed a five-hit shutout with six strikeouts and one walk in a 6-0 win at New Paltz.
