Police seek persons responsible for dumpster fire in Cortland

Update Wednesday, May 9, at 12:30 p.m.: The Cortland Police Department arrested 19-year-old Andrew Shutt, of Cortland, in connection with this incident. He is charged with attempted arson, a felony.

CORTLAND, N.Y. — Police are attempting to identify two men that are thought to be responsible for a dumpster fire in Cortland last month.

The incident occurred during daylight hours on April 23 in a dumpster behind a building located at 15 Elm Street, according to the Cortland Police Department.

The department released surveillance footage Tuesday afternoon that appears to show a man, wearing a yellow shirt and dark pants, running toward a dumpster in a parking lot behind a building.

The footage cuts off before any flames are visible.

Anyone who can identify one or both persons in the video is asked to contact the Cortland Police Department.
