Cortland County Sheriff's Office investigating phone scam

CORTLAND, N.Y. — The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating multiple complaints regarding a phone scam.

Using a local phone number, an unknown person is identifying himself as "Deputy Mark Davis."

The caller tells the receiver that there is an active warrant out for their arrest for not appearing before a grand jury. For a monetary fee or "money pack" payment, the caller claims the warrant can be voided.

"Officers would like to warn the public to not provide personal information over the phone. Police agencies also do not solicit funds to void or clear up arrest warrants," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

If anyone feels they are the victim of a phone scam or identity theft, they can contact the sheriff's office at 607-758-5599.
