Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Cortland County; 60 mph winds possible

CORTLAND, N.Y. — The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for southeastern Cortland County.

At around 2:40 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located near Groton, about 12 miles west of Cortland, moving at 15 mph.

Areas that will primarily be impacted by this afternoon's storms include Groton, Freeville, Dryden, South Cortland, Homer, and Virgil.

The warning is also in effect for southeastern Cayuga County and northeastern Tompkins County.

Forecasters are predicting wind gusts up to 60 mph and half-dollar-size hail droplets. Hail damage to vehicles is expected, along with wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

The warning will expire at 3:45 p.m.

For your protection, forecasters recommend moving to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.
