Cortland man charged with DWI following Sunday crash

CORTLAND, N.Y. — A Cortland man has been charged with driving while intoxicated following a crash in the town of Cortlandville Sunday afternoon.

At around 3 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to Route 215 in the town of Cortlandville for a one-car motor vehicle crash involving a pickup truck.

Nicolas Cowen, 23, was traveling north on Route 215 at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his vehicle. According to investigators, Cowen drove off the roadway, struck an embankment, and rolled over before the vehicle came to rest on its roof in the roadway, according to Lt. Karl Altmann with the sheriff's office.

Route 215 was closed for about an hour between Bennie Road and Starr Road to allow emergency crews to clean up the scene.

Cowen was transported by TLC Ambulance for non-life threatening injuries to Cortland Regional Medical Center for a medical evaluation.

He was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, as well as traffic infractions of speeding and driving across hazard markings.

Cowen was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in Cortlandville Town Court later this month.

The Cortlandville Fire Department and Stupke's Towing assisted with the investigation.
