Moravia man charged with DWI

Name: Eric J. Hale

Location: Interstate 81, Town of Cortlandville

Summary: On June 16, 2018 at approximately 4:56 p.m., New York State Police at Homer arrested Eric J. Hale, 24, of Moravia, for the misdemeanor of Driving While Intoxicated with a reported B.A.C. of .14%. A trooper on Interstate 81 in the town of Cortlandville observed Hale traveling in an excess of 100 miles per hour. After an investigation, troopers determined Hale was impaired and he was arrested.

Syracuse man had 11 suspensions on driver’s license, police say

Name: Iajah B. Hightower

Location: Route 281, Town of Cortlandville

Summary: On June 18, 2018, at approximately 10:05 a.m., officers from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle being operated by 41-year-old Iajah B. Hightower, of Syracuse, on Route 281 in the Town of Cortlandville for operating a motor vehicle while being on a cell phone. Upon further investigation, he was also found to be in possession of marijuana and narcotic drugs. Hightower was also found to be operating a motor vehicle with 11 suspensions on his driver’s license. Hightower was arraigned in the Town of Cortlandville Court and remanded to the Cortland County Jail on $500 cash bail.

Dryden man charged with DWI

Name: Alexander A. Knapp

Location: Route 38, Town of Harford

Summary: On June 18, 2018, at approximately 11:20 a.m., officers from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle being operated by 22-year-old Alexander Knapp, of Dryden, for an uninspected motor vehicle on Route 38 in the Town of Harford. Upon further investigation he was found to be in an intoxicated condition and impaired by drugs. He was also found to be in possession narcotic drug and marijuana. He was arrested, processed, and later released to a third party.

Cops: Woman caught driving with suspended license

Name: Debra L. VanDusen

Location: Lisle, N.Y.

Summary: At around 6:40 p.m., June 14, New York State Police at Whitney Point arrested 48-year-old Debra L. VanDusen, of Cortland, for the misdemeanor of aggravated unlicensed operation in the third degree and four counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree. Troopers observed an equipment violation on the vehicle VanDusen was operating while she was on Interstate 81 in the town of Lisle. After an investigation, troopers determined VanDusen had a suspended license and was in possession of “suspected” methamphetamine.

Groton man arrested on bench warrant

Name: Zachary J. Barhite

Location: Cortland, N.Y.

Summary: Barhite was arrested on a bench warrant for failure to appear in Cortland City Court. He had a needle and a stolen credit card in his possession when he was arrested on the warrant, police said. He was charged with criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree, a felony, and criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument, a misdemeanor.

Two charged with shoplifting at Walmart

Name: Stacy L. Updike
Name: Richard T. Stevens

Location: Walmart, Town of Cortlandville

Summary: On June 15, at around 9 p.m., officers from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office responded to Walmart in the Town of Cortlandville for a larceny investigation. Officers arrested 31-year-old Stacy Updike, of Cortland, for stealing $13.84 worth of merchandise from the store, authorities said. Richard Stevens, 20, of Cortland, who was also in the store at the time, was arrested for criminal trespass in the third degree because of an active no trespass order. Both were processed and released on appearance tickets.
