Cortland woman attempted to scale building to evade arrest, police say

CORTLAND, N.Y. — A Cortland woman attempted to scale a supermarket building to avoid being arrested, the Cortland County Sheriff's Office announced Wednesday.

At around 2:40 a.m. Wednesday, officers from the Cortland County Sheriff's Office checked on a vehicle that was parked in the fire lane in front of Tops Market on Route 281 in Cortlandville.

The driver, 31-year-old Nicole Chaffee, was driving without a license and did not have proper documentation for the vehicle she was driving, according to Lt. Karl Altmann with the sheriff's office.

When officers tried to take Chaffee into custody, she attempted to climb the outside of the Tops Market building in an attempt to get away, authorities said.

Chaffee was arraigned in Cortlandville Town Court and charged with misdemeanors of resisting arrest, drug possession, endangering the welfare of a child, and driving without a license.

The child traveling with Chaffee was released to a family member. Bail was set at $250 cash.
