CORTLAND, N.Y. — Today will be the hottest day of the year, according to some weather forecasters.
After a slight cooling off on Tuesday, temperatures are turning up once again for the middle of the work week.
There is also the potential for scattered thunderstorms and gusty winds late tonight and Thursday.
Today will be the hottest day of the rest of the year. I don't anticipate any more days with a heat index near 100. #NYwx https://t.co/RqGRIrou5x

Current weather models call for heat index values between 95 and 100 degrees in urban areas, and temperatures in the mid 90s elsewhere.
Young children, the elderly, sick and residents in urban areas are most at risk. Outdoor pets are also at risk without appropriate shade and water.
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
