SUNY Cortland junior quarterback Brett Segala (Webster/Webster Schroeder) has been recognized with two weekly honors for his performance during the Red Dragons' 51-14 win over visiting Morrisville State on Saturday, Oct. 6.
Segala was chosen as the Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this fall. He previously earned the award in early September. In addition, Segala was chosen to the D3football.com national Team of the Week, presented by Scoutware, which consists of the best performers by position among all Division III schools during the week. Segala was the lone quarterback selected.
Segala completed 27-of-33 passes (81.8 percent) for 340 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. He also rushed for a team-high 56 yards and a TD on nine carries. Segala was 18-of-24 passing for 252 yards and three scores in the first half alone as the Red Dragons built a 30-0 halftime lead. He completed TD passes of 58, 10, 33 and 7 yards, and he ran for a 4-yard score.
With his performance, Segala became only the second player in school history with at least an 80 percent completion percentage and a minimum of 20 completions in a single game. The only other player to accomplish this feat was Ralph Boettger, who was 25-of-31 (80.6 percent) versus Central Connecticut State in 1976.
Through five games, Segala is 95-of-150 passing (63.3 percent) for 1,536 yards with 18 touchdowns and four interceptions for a 183.6 passing efficiency rating. He currently ranks fourth nationally in Division III in points responsible for per game (25.6), fifth in passing efficiency rating, and ninth in both TD passes and yards per pass attempt (10.2).
Cortland (4-1, 2-1 Empire 8) will host Buffalo State Saturday at noon.
