Winter storm: Updated snowfall estimates for Cortland County

CORTLAND, N.Y. — The first winter storm of the season will hit the Southern Tier and Northeastern Pennsylvania Thursday night.

A winter storm warning is in effect from 5 p.m. Thursday through 10 a.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm will begin with bursts of snow Thursday afternoon into the evening hours, then mixing with sleet and freezing rain overnight. This wintry mix will change back to snow by Friday morning.

Heavy snow is expected, with total snow accumulations of 5-9 inches estimated for central New York. The Cortland area is expected to receive 6-8 inches of snow through Friday afternoon.

Travel could be difficult. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
