CORTLAND, N.Y. — The Cortland County SPCA is investigating an animal cruelty case after a dog was found tied to a tree in the woods in a remote area of Freetown.

At around 4:30 p.m., Cortland County SPCA investigators responded to a report of an abandoned dog near the area of 2935 Hoxie Gorge Freetown Rd. in the town of Freetown.

A passerby heard the dog barking and, after investigating the sound, discovered footprints which led to a dog tied to a tree in the woods approximately 100 yards off the roadway.

The witness also noticed a red Dodge pickup truck 1500 with wide tires leaving the area, but was unable to read the plate number. The witness suspects the truck was manufactured sometime between 2003 and 2006.

The dog, a brown and white Boxer mix would have likely died if the person had not found it, SPCA Chief Law Enforcement Officer Bill Carr said.

Anyone with information regarding the person or persons who abandoned the dog is asked to contact the Cortland County SPCA Law Enforcement Department at 607-753-9386.
