Cortland alum, 'pioneer' for girls sports, dies at 92

Robert Young, a 1949 Cortland alumnus and a 1984 C-Club Hall of Fame inductee, passed away at age 92 on November 30, 2018.

Young was a pioneer for gaining equality for girls sports in Section Eleven on Long Island. He facilitated the merger between the section, which oversaw only boys athletic programs in the early 1970s, and the Suffolk County Girls Athletic Association, which oversaw all girls athletic programs.

Young served as director of Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation for the Island Trees Public Schools in Levittown from 1950-65 and as the district supervisor of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Athletics and Health Services for the South Huntington Union Free School District for 16 years until his retirement in 1981.
