Cortland woman arrested in stabbing on South Avenue

CORTLAND, N.Y. — A city man is in stable condition after he was stabbed in the neck Saturday night, suffering a collapsed lung, according to city police.

Officers arrested Jessica Blackburn, 37, of 90 Owego Street Cortland at 6:01 p.m., shortly after the stabbing, and charged her with first-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, felonies, according to the department.

Blackburn stabbed the 35-year-old man at a residence on South Avenue, said Lt. Michael Strangeway. The man was taken to State University Of New York Upstate Medical University hospital.

It is possible additional charges will be filed against Blackburn, Assistant District Attorney Chris Simser said Monday afternoon.

“It’s an incident of domestic violence,” Simser said of the stabbing, adding that Blackburn is believed to have a child with the man.

Blackburn was arraigned and sent to the the Cortland County Correctional Facility on $100,000 cash or $200,000 bond bail. She is scheduled to appear at 9 a.m. Wednesday in City Court with her lawyer Dave Hartnett.
