Marathon girls basketball wins first round of Sectionals

MARATHON, N.Y. — In front of a packed gym Tuesday night, the Marathon girls basketball team came away victorious in the first round of the Section IV Class D playoffs, dominating Charlotte Valley by a score of 51-25.

Brooke Tillotson led the way for the Olympians with 20 points, while Jenna Lubbers was all over the scoreboard for Charlotte Valley, scoring 19 of the team's total 25 points.

Prior to Tuesday's victory, the Olympians finished the season at 7-13 under Drew Pierce, who is in his fourth season as the girls' head coach.

"They stepped up and played together tonight," Marathon head coach Drew Pierce. "I told them, 'Don't play for me, play for each other.' This game is 90 percent heart and hustle and they showed it tonight."

The Marathon girls' team travels to Stamford High School Friday night. The Marathon boys' basketball team will play an opponent TBD at Marathon High School, Sat., Feb. 23, at 6 p.m.
