A new event is coming to Cortland County this fall, and it's one that embraces the industrial giants that found fortune in our humble community.

Gears to Corsets, A Steampunk Festival comes to Cortland County the weekend of Sept. 27-29, the Cortland County Convention & Visitors' Bureau announced late last week.

Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction or fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th century steam-powered machinery (hence the name).

“Cortland County’s rich industrial history makes it the perfect setting for a steampunk-themed festival,” said Meghan Lawton, Executive Director of the Cortland County Convention & Visitors Bureau, in a press release. “We are very excited to announce this event and cannot wait to see it come to fruition this September.”

Former industrial titans like Brockway Carriage, The Wickwire Brothers and the Cortland Corset Company planted their roots in Cortland County, some as early as the 19th century.

The festival will feature events at The Corset Building, The 1890 House, the CNY Living History Center, the Cortland County Historical Society and the Center for the Arts of Homer. More events and locations are still being finalized, Lawton said.
