Cortland police charge Queens man with sexual assault

City police arrested a Queens man on felony sex abuse charges after Child Protective Services reported to police he assaulted a 12-year-old girl, according to the Cortland Police Department.

Rashon Martin, 26, of 23042 146 Ave. was arrested at 9:45 a.m. June 8 for sexually touching the girl at a residence on Church Street, said Lt. Michael Strangeway. Child Protective Services became aware of the attacks, which occurred over a course of several days in February, during an investigation in May and contacted the police on May 15, Strangeway said.

During the three-week investigation, officers determined Martin touched the neck, breast and vagina of the girl, as well as kissed her stomach and inner thighs, he said.

Martin was charged with first-degree criminal sex act and first-degree seax abuse, felonies, as well as forcible touching and endangering the welfare of a child, misedemanors. He was sent to jail on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond and is set to appear Wednesday in City Court.
