The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles along with the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee recently announced free child seat inspections throughout the state during the months of September and October.

Cortland County will hold these free inspections on two separate occasions:

Saturday, September 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Walmart parking lot on Bennie Road, Cortland, NY 13045

Saturday, October 19th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Beaudry Park on Scammel Street, Cortland, NY 13045

Trained technicians will be at these events to educate parents and caregivers on how to select a child car seat that will fit their child and vehicle. Technicians will also make sure to teach parents how to use car seats correctly.

These free events aim to assure that all parents and caregivers know and understand how to use and choose an appropriate seat for a child of a certain age and size.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, child safety seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers.

“As a father and grandfather, I urge all parents and caregivers to take advantage of this free service," said DMV commissioner and GTSC chair, Mark Schroeder. "Learning how to properly install and use child safety equipment only takes a few minutes, but it can make a lifesaving difference in a crash.”
