Marathon field hockey falls to Greene in Sectionals Semi-Finals

Yesterday, the Marathon varsity field hockey team suffered a tough (0-5) loss against Greene in the semi-final round of the Section IV Class C playoffs.

As soon as the game started, Greene began to take control. The Lady Olympians tried to contain them, but with 13:22 left in the first half, Greene scored to get a 0-1 lead.

After that Greene went on to score two more goals before the end of the first half.

Coming into the second half, Marathon came in more aggressive and had a couple of effective counter attacks, but they were not able to put one on the board.

Greene then went on to score two more goals before the end of regulation to knock the Lady Olympians out the playoffs in the Semi-Finals.

"With this team only winning two games last year, our main goal this year was to get into the postseason, and to get to the semi-finals was more than what we anticipated originally," said Marathon head coach Karen Funk. "They played with a lot of determination. I think we adjusted well in the second half, but offensively we couldn't get it inside the 25. It was a great effort on their part and they played a good team.

"Throughout the season, they caught on to how important it was to play together. They never gave up. They never had a give-up attitude. They were very determined that they were going to make it into the postseason."
