Marathon Dominates Section IV Finals

Yesterday, both Marathon varsity girls and boys soccer teams won their Section IV Class D championship games against Cherry Valley-Springfield and are headeding into the Regional Tournament.

Marathon Girls Soccer

The Lady Olympians were up first against Cherry Valley-Springfield, as they had a morning game that started at 11 a.m.

The Olympians were able to come up with a 3-0 win to take the Section IV title home.

At first it was looking like Cherry Valley-Springfield was gaining control of the game, but then 15-minutes into the first half, Marathon began to dominate. As Paige Hurlburt scored the first goal of the game with 16:13 left in the first half. 30-seconds a free kick was given to Marathon, and Jenelle Short kicked it over the goalie's head to make it 2-0 before the end of the first half.

Coming into the second half, the Lady Olympians kept dominating the game by taking control of the midfield. Then with 14:02 left in the game, Abigail Ensign scored off an assist from Delta Barber to make it 3-0 and secure the win.

The Lady Olympians will next take on Section III Champion, Poland this upcoming Saturday, November 9th at Norwich High School. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.

Marathon Boys Soccer

After a great win by the lady Olympians, the Marathon Boys soccer team were up next.

The Olympians defeated CVS by a dominating score of 4-1, with four different Marathon players scoring a goal each to win the Section IV Class D title for the second straight year.

Marathon had a 3-0 lead at the end of the first half with goals from Cameron Neilson, Diego Castellot and Trenton O’Neill.

Then in the second half, Ethan Morrison scored to make it 4-0 and secure the win.

With about 13-minutes remaining CVS were able to get one goal in, but it wasn't enough to make a comeback against the undefeated Olympians.

The Olympians are now moving on into the regional tournament. They are scheduled to play at Liverpool High School this upcoming Saturday, November 9th. Their opponent and time of the game are yet to be announced.
