Last night, the McGraw varsity boys basketball team suffered a tough 55-64 loss against Moravia in the first round of the Cortland Holiday Tournament at the Cortland Jr/Sr. High School.
It was a close game, as both teams would take shots at each other to start the game. The opening quarter would then end with McGraw trailing by two (10-12).
McGraw would then begin to dominate the paint both offensively and defensively. Overall, the team ended the game with a total of 40 rebounds.
However, the Eagles were not able to get an edge over Moravia, as they would end the first half trailing by four (26-30).
“Our plan coming into the game was trying to do the things that we do best, which means not turning the ball over and playing good defense,” said McGraw Head Coach Derek Allen “Moravia did force us into some turnovers. They like to trap a lot in the half court and it definitely caused some havoc for us.”
Coming into the second half, the Eagles were able to keep it close, as they would tie the game up 32-32 with about five minutes left in the third quarter.
Moravia however, was able to take back the lead in the final quarter, forcing the Eagles to begin fouling with less than a minute left in the game.
“We were able to make some big shots and keep it close down the stretch,” said Coach Allen. “We had some good ball movement down the stretch and we also had some players step up.”
McGraw junior, Caleb Smith led the Eagles with a double-double, as he recorded a total of 24-points to go along with his 10 assists throughout the game. Following Smith was Xiao Lin with 11-points and seven rebounds. McGraw center Brent Thomas also had a good game with six points and nine rebounds.
The Eagles will be coming back to Cortland Jr./Sr. High School this evening (Saturday, December 28th), as they will play in the Tournament’s consolation game at 4 p.m.
