Cortland Weather Outlook: Wednesday, January 1

Your Finger Lakes Weather forecast for Cortland and the surrounding areas for Wednesday, January 1, 2020:

The New Year will start off with a small reminder that it is in fact winter, though we will quickly go back to warmer weather tomorrow.

Overall, it will be a relatively quiet winter day. A few lake effect snow showers will dot the area from time to time but will not amount to any noticeable accumulations.

The snow showers will be most likely early this morning when winds are from the northwest, sending in snow from Lake Ontario, and again in the mid to late afternoon as winds turn to the southwest and a few flurries from Lake Erie move through.

Those winds will be blustery, clocking in at 12-17 mph with gusts reaching 30-35 mph.

With the cool winds and lack of appreciable sunshine, temperatures will only rise a few degrees today. Look for highs in the low 30s. Evening temperatures will fall into the mid 20s, then remain steady overnight.

Here is a look at the weather forecast for the next several days:

Thursday: Sunshine with a few clouds passing through. Morning temperatures in the low 20s with afternoon highs in the mid 40s.

Friday: Mostly cloudy with on and off rain showers. Morning lows in the low 30s. High temperatures in the low 40s.

Saturday: More on and off rain showers. Morning lows in the low 40s and afternoon highs near 50.

Sunday: A few snow showers, especially early on in the day. Morning temperatures in the upper 20s, falling to the mid 20s in the afternoon.
