McGraw varsity girls volleyball loses to Stockbridge Valley in five sets

After a hard fought battle, the McGraw varsity girls volleyball team were defeated in five sets against the Stockbridge Valley Cougars last night.

The McGraw Lady Eagles lost the first set 21-25. However, after several rallies, the Eagles dominated the following two sets (25-17) and (25-18).

“We came in wanting to fight hard and dig deep,” said McGraw Head Coach Jessyca Doran. “I’ve been coaching for six years, and have never won two sets against this team (Stockbridge Valley). They are a very strong team. Our girls came out and left everything on the court. I am very proud of how hard they played.”

McGraw senior Crystin Burdick led the Eagles with eight kills. Freshman Megan Stull had six kills and five digs, while senior Ashley White had six assists and three digs.

The Eagles needed to take one more set to win the match, but Stockbridge Valley won the fourth set 17-25, forcing the teams to play in a deciding fifth set.

In the final set, the Cougars scored eight of the first 11 points. The Eagles kept themselves within five points several times during the final frame, but fell short.

“In this game, we learned to stick together,” said Coach Doran. “We didn't come up with the win, but it was a victory for them because they’ve never been so strong against this team.”

Up next, the Eagles will host Brookfield on Wednesday, January 15th at 5:30 p.m.
