Cortland Weather Outlook: Thursday, January 16

Your Finger Lakes Weather forecast for Cortland and the surrounding areas for Thursday, January 16, 2020:

Winter will start to make a comeback after an area of low pressure passed through overnight.

Behind this low, moisture laden air will produce a spray of lake effect snow across the region. Most of the day will be snowy with a few heavier squalls from time to time.

The snow will be slow to accumulate at first with temperatures starting in the mid 30s. A slow drop into the low 30s will occur during the morning and early afternoon.

By the late afternoon and evening, temperatures will fall through the 20s, and the snow will start to accumulate quicker. Road conditions should also deteriorate during this time.

The highest snow amounts will be in the northern part of the county, where as much as six inches could fall along the Onondaga-Cortland county line. Snow totals will decrease further south, with just an inch or tow in the southern portions of the county.

In addition to the snow, it will become windy. Northwest winds will blow at 12-17 mph with gusts as high as 45 mph. The wind will be strongest in the afternoon, but will remain plenty blustery into the evening.

The snow should move west and come to an end overnight.
