Last night, the Marathon varsity girls basketball team suffered a tough 39-60 loss against Section III Class B school, Vernon Verona Sherrill (VVS).

It was a rough start for the Marathon Olympians, as they trailed by 16 at the end of the first quarter. VVS hit five of their six 3-pointers in the first half.

In the second half, the Lady Olympians started to slowly come back from the deficit, as they outscored VVS 12-7 in the third quarter. VVS was able to close the game in the fourth quarter, resulting in a Marathon loss.

“We traded baskets with them too much,” said Marathon Head Coach Andrew Pierce. “We ran into a better team. Defensively, in the third quarter, we did some things well.”

Senior Molly Merihew led the Olympians with 11 points. Both Sophomore Brooke Tillotson and eighth grader Abby Ensign ended the game with nine points each.

VVS junior Morgan Brewer led her team with 18 points (she made three out of VVS’s six 3-pointers).

Up next, the Lady Olympians will be playing in the Section IV Class D Tournament. Dates and match-ups will be announced soon.
