POLKVILLE --- One man is dead and another injured after each received stab wounds this morning at the Cortland Motel on Route 11, according to the Cortland Sheriff’s Office.

The deceased was stabbed in the chest and was taken by TLC Emergency Medical Services to Guthrie Cortland Medical Center, where he died of his wounds, Capt. Rob Derksen stated in a news release.

Another man was taken to the Cortland hospital by TLC ambulance with what is believed to be a non-life threatening stab wound, Derksen stated.

Sheriff’s investigators believe the two men were the only participants in the incident, he said.

Derksen declined to comment on if the stabbings were the result of a fight.

“Until we’re further into the investigation we’re not willing to draw any conclusions,” Derksen said this afternoon in a phone interview.

Names and ages of the men were also not released this afternoon.

The stabbings occurred around 7:20 a.m., according to the department. Investigators urge anyone with information to call Sgt. Investigator Stacy Billings at (607) 758-5536.

New York State Police and the Cortlandville Fire Department also aided the Sheriff’s Office at the scene.

Almost four hours after the stabbing, officers and investigators were still investigating the scene, taking pictures of a room on the east end of the motel and making notes. Yellow emergency tape cordoned off the motel and the parking lot of the adjacent Night Owls bar.

“We’re still in the sorting-out phase,” Derksen said this morning at the scene.
